The Oyo State House of Assembly has passed a motion calling on the Federal Governmernt, through the state government, to upgrade the facilities at Ibadan airport to an international standard.
Hon. Lekan Ganiyu, who moved this motion said the upgrading will boost business activities in the capital city and neighbouring states of Osun, Ondo and Ekiti.
He also said, this will gradually translate to an improvement of commerce within the environs.
Hon. Afeez Jimoh, representing Irepo/Olorunsogo Constituency urged the mover of the motion to meet with their colleagues at the National Assembly to move the same motion at the national level in order to facilitate the motion.
Supporting the motion, Hon. Fadipe Jimoh said the state government should call on the Federal Government to do something about the issue because it has been due for upgrading.
Speaking to newsmen, Hon. Lekan Ganiyu said he moved such motion because there are some airports in Nigeria that started operation with Ibadan airport and those airports had been upgraded, citing the example of Kano, Kaduna and Port Harcourt.
He said if the airport is upgraded, it will facilitate the generation of revenue and will provide jobs in the state.
Meanwhile the state House of Assembly has summoned the chairmen of the 33 local governments in the state to give accounts of their stewardship in the last six months.
The council bosses are to forward accounts of both their income and expenditure within the period to the House through the clerk, within the next two weeks, the Assembly ordered on Tuesday.
Moving the motion at the sitting of the House, Hon. Olatunde Saheed said this has become imperative to ensure probity and accountability under the democratic dispensation.
In his contribution, Hon. Abiola Ayorinde, representing Ibadan North II said the accounts of their stewardship should be made known to the public, citing a Quranic verse to support his statement.
According to him, the House should call the chairmen to defend their stewardship and explain how they spent public funds.
